Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV)

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) is a scheme launched in July 2004, for setting up residential schools at upper primary level for girls belonging predominantly to the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities. The scheme is being implemented in educationally backward blocks of the country where the female rural literacy is below the national average and gender gap in literacy is above the national average. The scheme provides for a minimum reservation of 75% of the seats for girls belonging to SC, ST, OBC or minority communities and priority for the remaining 25%, is accorded to girls from families below poverty line.

Objectives and Admission Proceedure.

Initiatives for the implementation of the programme

61 Educationally Backward Blocks were identified initially and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) schools were sanctioned in the Planning Approval Board meeting of MHRD held on 03.12.2004.  Three additional KGBVs were sanctioned in 22nd Feb, 2005 and 7 KGBVs sanctioned in 2010-11 PAB totaling to 71 in all and are made operational. 

During 2004-05, 34 KGBVs with 100 and 24 with 50 intake capacity were approved and started.  In 2005-06, 3 additional KGBVs with the intake capacity of 100 were sanctioned and made operational in 2006-07. MHRD also permitted upgradation of 24 KGBVs to raise the intake capacity to 100. During 2008-09 – 2 KGBVs for Muslim dominated blocks (Gangavathi from Koppal district and Sindhanur from Raichur district) and 01 KGBV for EBBs (Yadgir) have been given with an intake capacity of 100 girls. All the 03 are operational among 61 KGBVs of previous years 3 KGBVs (Gudibale, Channapatna, K.R. Nagara) were given 50 intake of girls. Accordingly they were operational.  Hence all the KGBVs  except - 03 were operational with 100 intake capacity till 2009-10. SSA Karnataka made a proposal to convert all the 61 KGBVs from Model III to Model I. PAB approved the same and in the year 2011-12  7 New KGBV T.Narasipura, Nanjangudu,Hunsu,Mysore Tq in Mysore District, Mallavalli, pandavapura in Mandya District, Yallanduru in Chamarajnagar Districts were sanctioned and they are operational as of now 71 KGBVs are functioning in Karnataka

Coverage in the state.

In Karnataka, 71 KGBVs are functional. Out of which 39 KGBVs are managed by SSA society and 32 KGBVs are managed by Mahila Samakhya Karnataka.

Success Stories

Special Programmes and new initiatives:

In the beginning of the academic year saraswathi pooja was performed. Annual Day was celebrated before the commencement of vacation. On this day children were awarded prizes for their best scholastic & sports performances.

Many World celebration days – World Environment day, World Population day were celebrated. On these days, special discussions and lectures were organized to children to note the importance of the day in student’s life. All KGBV children have won the prizes in Pratibha Karanji competition at taluka and district levels.

Children from Gulbarga(20), Bidar(15), Bijapur (15) and Bagalkote (29) have participated & won medals in Karate championship & other sports – high jump, kho-kho, long jump, shot put, etc held at divisional, taluka and state levels which were organized by YSSD ( Youth Service & Sports Department). In addition to this Scouts and Guides trainings have been a part of co curricular activities in Bellary, Koppal, Bijapur and Gulbarga KGBV schools. These trainings imparted knowledge on service and integration. Also input was given on Science experiments and cleanliness through external resource persons. To relieve from stress and lessen the burden of study, Music lessons are part of curriculum in Bellary KGBV schools. Quiz program was also held in the districts to improve the learning levels of children.

Achievements:

    • 6 students from Aland KGBV have won Rs. 2000/- as cash prize in sports competitions organized by Kottal Basaveshwara Institution. The same institution has provided 2 computers to Chittapur KGBV School.
    • 270 children from Koppal and Bijapur KGBVs have written competitive exams. 20 have been won prizes, and 20 have been selected for state level competitions.
    • In Raichur district KGBVs, all children are encouraged to write diary to improve their hand writing.
    • Bellary KGBV children have participated and won prizes in fancy dress competitions.
    • In Bagalkote & Bellary KGBV children have encouraged to cultivate Kitchen garden and grown vegetables are used in the daily food preparation
    • Bijapur KGBV children have prepared & exhibited science materials in Science IT mela
    • In Bellary, Kishori news letter has been prepared by articles written by children
    • In Bellary and Bijapur KGBVs, Science experiments were performed by Agastya Foundation.
    • 200 children from Bijapur KGBVs, have won prizes in cultural competitions organized by Kannada & Samskruti Department. 42 children have participated in Yuva Jana Mela and won prizes.
    • 2 children from Koppal KGBV have been selected for state level Karate Competitions.

Success Stories/Good Practices of KGBVs

  • KGBV children of Harapanahalli block of Davangere district have participated in the Independence Day parade on 15-08-09 at Bangalore.
  • KGBV children of Bidar district have participated in the Republic day parade on 26-01-2010 at Bangalore and won second prize in March past.
  • Many KGBV children have participated in the State Level Prathibha Karanji programme.
  • Many KGBV children have learnt Karate, yoga, Malla Kamba and other martial arts.

Success Stories/Good Practices of KGBVs of Bagalkot and Koppal district KGBV students have participated in different activities in block level, district level and state level in Pratibha Karanji, Sports, & Other Activities.

  • Kumari Radha Mankani and Kumari Tunga Kambal participated in Chadmavesh competition.
  • Kumari Puja Patil & group have participated in Group Dance at Dist level.
  • Kumari Rekha Shantageri & group participated in KHO-KHO competition at dist level. Kasturi Kambar & Group have participated in Kabaddi. Kumari Jyoti Rangannavar was participated in running & take fist place.
  • Kumari Jainabai Pujar and Mankamma Nayak have participated in state level swimming competition.
  • Kavita Goni &Didi Ayesha have taken 1st place in the dist level karate competition held at Koppal.
  • The following girls have secured prizes in the competitions mentioned in front of their names

  • 4 KGBV students of Bidar district have learnt karate and have won prizes at district as well as division level competitions.
  • The students of KGBV from Bidar district have participated in pratibha karanji at state level and have secured prizes.
  • KGBV students of Bidar district have participated in the Republic day parade at Bangalore.
